District 217 Financial and Legal Information


Welcome to the Abingdon Community Unit School District 217 webpage. Abingdon CUSD #217 serves families and citizens in an 89-square mile area. The district includes two attendance centers for students in grades Pre-K through 12. Enrollments for the first day of the 2010-2011 school year were as follows: Hedding Elementary- 345; Abingdon Middle School - 165; and Abingdon High school – 345. Pre-K enrollment is 38.

High school students choose from a curriculum including dual credit and vocational courses. The district partners with Carl Sandburg College for the dual credit course and is a member of the Galesburg Vocational Area Cooperative for vocational courses. Vocational course offerings include welding, nursing, and advanced computer certification. Abingdon’s focus on 21st century skills includes the use of SMART board technologies in all classrooms. The computer to student ratio at the elementary is 1:5 and the computer to student ratio at the middle-high schools is 1:1.5. Abingdon is a member of the Knox-Warren Special Education Coop. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs and extracurricular sports. Abingdon is a member of the Illinois Elementary School Association and Illinois High School Association.

Abingdon Middle School was recognized as a Spotlight School by the Illinois State Board of Education. Spotlight Schools awards honor high poverty, high performing schools where at least 50% of students are classified as low-income and at least 60% passed (met or exceeded standards) on the state reading and mathematics tests. All Spotlight Schools made annual yearly progress and sustained their performance over the past three years.

In July, 2010, Abingdon CUSD received a generous donation of $250,000 from the Zimmer Trust. The money was designated for technology.
